About Ctrl+Z

Ctrl+Z by Gianluca Stasi

The Ctrl+Z architecture studio is an initiative of Gianluca Stasi, a graduate in Architecture from the Università la Sapienza in Rome (2005), and a PhD from the University of Seville (2018).

Since its foundation in Seville (Spain) in 2010, Ctrl+Z has supported, contributed to and developed collaborative, participatory, self-construction and low-tech initiatives and processes in various parts of the world: South America, Central America and of course numerous locations in Europe. These initiatives have been recognized at an institutional level and, more importantly, by the communities they serve.

Working formulas such as collective work, self-construction, mutual aid and barter are often used to structure new initiatives. It is these schemes, more than specific forms or the use of unorthodox materials, that outline the continuity and coherence of Ctrl+Z's work and constitute the core of its proposal.
·

Professional practice combines research, experimentation, the construction of full-scale social projects, with educational and informative activities.

One of the lines of educational dissemination is structured in the form of a project workshop to present and share with participants the working methods and approach to communities that are used: we believe that the sustainability and social nature of architecture are not found in the volumes or materials, but rather in its focus, in its approach and interaction with communities and in the work schemes it employs.

Specific courses are also held, aimed at both adults and children, on construction techniques such as superarobe, thanks to the “long-term apprenticeship course” a training period carried out directly at the CalEarth Institute in California, or geodesic structures that have been extensively researched during the doctorate and have been the subject of numerous projects and courses.

Lectures are also given on various topics related to professional activity, starting with participatory architecture and bottom-up architectural processes related to social processes, up to residual or unused spaces, interventions in public spaces, and the implementation of community spaces and facilities.
·

Ctrl+Z's proposals have been part of both architectural exhibitions, including the official exhibitions of the Italian Pavilion at the XV Biennale d'Architettura di Venezia (2016) and the I Biennale d'Architecture de Lyon (2017), and mathematical exhibitions, such as the Mathematical Art Galleries at the 2018 Joint Mathematics Meetings organized by the Mathematical Association of America in San Diego, USA.
·

In 2017, her professional career was recognized by the Curry Stone Design Prize, an international award that seeks to “highlight, honor and reward the professional careers of those who work in architecture from a social perspective to contribute to improving the daily living conditions of communities around the world.”
